Academic content standards define the “what” of instruction but educators determine the “how” of instruction. The evidence base of research and expert knowledge on effective teaching and learning in the content areas provides an important foundation for educators as they identify and select effective instructional practices. An awareness of current research and knowledge can help educators select and implement effective teaching practices that will meet the needs of all students and ensure deep learning of the content. The evidence base of research and expert knowledge is useful for teachers who are planning instruction, educators developing curricula and planning professional development and for all members of the Ohio education community interested in knowing more about how students learn.

The information provided in this section is based on the latest research and knowledge of experts in the fields of instruction, learning, English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Social Studies. These brief research summaries do not represent an endorsement by the Ohio Department of Education. Districts and educators should interpret or use this information to best meet their own needs.

Please check back at this site again. These research summaries will be updated with current research as it becomes available and additional topics will be added.
